GEANT4 is a Monte-Carlo tool for modelling the transport of radiation through matter. GEANT4 is used in a wide range of fields including high-energy physics, nuclear physics, nuclear medicine, space science and hard X-ray synchrotron science. This workshop, hosted by the XAS beamline at the Australian Synchrotron, will introduce users to the GEANT4 toolkit. It will be supplemented with a talk on the use of the MASSIVE computer cluster. By the end of the one-day course, you will have had hands-on experience running simple models and parallelizing the execution of the jobs on MASSIVE. Places are limited and registration is required which closes on Monday 3rd December 2012. Note that desired prerequisite skills apply and participants are required to bring a laptop to use during the course.

The Soft X-ray beamline at the Australian Synchrotron is hosting a workshop on spectroscopy techniques in conjunction with the Australian Synchrotron User Meeting. The workshop will run over three days, with the first day limited to 15 novice, student users. Day 2 will cover beamline techniques and developments and includes international and expert keynote speakers. Day 3 will provide beamline users with the opportunity to present and discuss their research, and will include a presentation about MASSIVE. Registration fees apply and standard 2-day registrations close on Wednesday 21 November 2012. Note: Applications for the 3-day workshop and complimentary student places for the 2-day component, as well as abstract submissions, are now closed.

This workshop aims to inform the biology community about modern SAS instrumentation, experimental design and data analysis with particular emphasis on modelling from low-resolution solution scattering data. Hosted at Australian Synchrotron, this workshop will comprise an introduction to SAS techniques on day one for those with no experience with SAS methods, followed by three days of in-depth instruction on collecting high quality SAS data and analysis strategies. During the workshop some samples will be run on the beamline with data being processed by MASSIVE. This workshop is targeted at researchers in structural biology, from PhD students to post doctoral fellows, and even interested group leaders. Registration fees apply and close on Wednesday 7th November 2012.

The powder diffraction team at OPAL in conjunction with the powder diffraction beamline at the Australian Synchrotron is hosting a powder diffraction data analysis workshop at ANSTO aimed at PhD students and early career researchers. The workshop seeks to provide current and potential users of these powder diffraction facilities with a well rounded overview of powder diffraction techniques and software, including: basic crystallography; advice on experiment planning and applying for neutron or synchrotron beamtime; understanding the information contained within PD data; and an overview of data analysis software. An overview about MASSIVE will be given during this workshop and will highlight the capabilities the PD beamline and the benefits MASSIVE can bring to data analysis - particularly relating to structure solution and density functional theory calculations. Note: Expressions of interest have now closed for this workshop and those who have been accepted to the workshop will be contacted.
